Behind the Curtain: a spotlight on the women whose passion and perseverance continue to shape the indie music landscape.
Last month, I had the honor of being featured in Mic Magazine’s “Behind the Curtain: Celebrating Rockstars of the Music Industry” for Women’s Herstory Month—a spotlight on the women whose passion and perseverance continue to shape the music landscape.
Being included alongside these bold, resilient, and deeply committed women was humbling and inspiring. Despite the obstacles we face in this industry, what connects us is our shared love for the music and the people who create it.
Here’s a piece of what I shared in the feature:
“Everything we do today in music and business as the 'norm' was once a new idea. Don’t be afraid to break traditions, challenge expectations, and carve your own path.If you have a new idea—say it, own it, and try it. Even if it doesn’t go exactly as planned, that’s not failure; it’s progress.”
It reminded me of a story from years ago—one that quietly shaped everything I do now. After a traumatic accident left my then-partner, a musician, unable to work, the local music community—many of whom didn’t even know him—organized a massive benefit show. They didn’t wait to be asked. They just showed up.
That kind of selfless support changed me. When the relationship eventually ended, what stayed with me wasn’t heartbreak—it was the overwhelming need to thank those musicians. A close friend gave me the best advice I’ve ever received:
“You want to thank them? Go to their shows. Buy their merch.”
That simple act of gratitude became a mission. It led to a life centered around supporting musicians, working beside them, and eventually building Divvy Music—a platform created with artists at the heart.
